Proud to serve the Danvers community!
The town of Danvers in Essex County, Massachusetts has achieved notoriety as being the actual site of much of the hysteria associated with what came to be known as the Salem Witch Trials. The 17th century Rebecca Nurse Homestead, home to a woman executed in these trials, is open to the public. While Danvers was settled in 1636 under its original name of Salem Village, it did not incorporate until 1757. The King at this time, George II, in fact actually tried to repeal the town’s incorporation, but Danvers’s citizens took no notice. In 1893, however, they created a town seal with the slogan “The King Unwilling”, meant to commemorate the town’s stubborn, independent streak.
While Danvers had a certain amount of local industry in the 19th century, primarily shoe manufacturing, it was first and foremost an agricultural community. In fact, two different types of vegetable were developed here, the Danvers Half-Long Carrot and the Danvers Onion. This last-named vegetable has given Danvers its nickname of “Oniontown”. Danvers today is headquarters to the Osram Sylvania lighting products manufacturer, and also has a number of healthcare-related businesses including Beverly Hospital at Danvers, the Hospice of the North Shore and Medtronic Vascular.
In the summertime, when the weather is mild and pleasant, Danvers locals enjoy free outdoor concerts held at the Danvers Rotary Pavilion on the Peabody Institute Library lawn. Sandy Beach is open between Memorial Day and Labor Day, while Danvers Harbor offers facilities for recreational boaters. Winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy Danvers’ snowy weather by cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding in Endicott Park.
