At Kearney HVAC, we hear all kinds of names for Mitsubishi Electric ductless mini splits. Mini split heat pumps, split air conditioners, split AC units, air handlers — the list goes on. Whatever you call it, here’s what you may not know: mini splits provide energy efficient cooling and heating for your home. In addition to keeping your house air conditioned in the summer, a mini split can provide the cozy heat you need all winter, even when temperatures are at their lowest here in Massachusetts.
How Do Mini Splits Work in the Winter?
You may be wondering how one HVAC unit can provide heating in addition to air conditioning. The answer has to do with how mini splits move heat from one place to another.
A mini split heat pump is comprised of an outside condenser unit and one or more indoor air handlers, connected via refrigerant lines. In the summer, each indoor air handler absorbs excess indoor heat and moves it outdoors to the outside condenser unit. In the winter, things work in reverse; the outside condenser unit absorbs low-temperature outdoor heat, compresses it, and moves it indoors to the air handlers.
With one or more mini splits in your home, you can get energy efficient air conditioning or heating, where and when you need it.
How Do I Choose the Right Mini Split for My Home?
Here in the Salisbury, MA area where winters are below-freezing, it’s especially important to choose a high quality mini split for your home. That’s why we install mini splits by Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating. These mini splits can supply heat when outside temperatures are as low as -13°F, making them a great option for New England’s cold climate.
Mitsubishi Electric mini splits are also impressive when it comes to their energy efficiency. Mini splits are rated with a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) rating. The higher the HSPF rating, the more efficient the mini split. Most ENERGY STAR rated mini splits are between 8.5 and 12.5 HSPF, and many Mitsubishi Electric mini splits are between 10 and 13.5 HSPF.
