Many homeowners who are considering upgrading their HVAC system with a heat pump have one question on their mind: “Can a heat pump really provide reliable and energy efficient heating and cooling for my home?”

The answer: a resounding yes — especially if you choose a high performance heat pump by Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating. Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps are designed to keep homes comfortable year-round, including those in cold climates like that of Massachusetts’ North Shore.

How a Heat Pump Works

Heat pumps do not generate heat. Instead, they transfer heat from one place to another. This is how they are able to efficiently provide both heating and cooling for your home.

In Winter

In cold weather, the heat exchanger in the outside unit absorbs ambient heat (even at temperatures as low as -17°F). The refrigerant in the heat exchanger then moves this heat indoors to the indoor heat exchanger. As air passes over this indoor heat exchanger, heat from the refrigerant warms the air, creating warm air for your home.

In Summer

In hot weather, the process works in reverse. The indoor heat exchanger absorbs excess ambient heat. Then, using refrigerant as the medium, the heat pump transfers this heat to the outdoor heat exchanger.

Heat Pumps Provide Targeted Heating & Cooling

Here’s one more thing you should know about heat pumps: when you choose a ductless heat pump, also known as a mini split heat pump, you get targeted heating and cooling for particular areas in your home. This is because mini split heat pump systems feature one or more indoor air handlers which blow heated or cooled air exactly where you want it.

You might, for example, have one indoor air handler installed in your living room, and then one installed in each bedroom. Or, if you’d still like to take advantage of your home’s existing heating system, you might install one indoor air handler in a particularly hard-to-condition room.

Plus, since no ductwork is involved, heat pump installation is very straightforward. There really is no simpler way to upgrade your home comfort than with a Mitsubishi Electric ductless heat pump.
